Travel Options:

There are various transportation options to reach the park, depending on what area you want to visit and the time of year you are travelling. The area with the most visitor facilities, such as cabanas, camping area, café, information center and hiking trails is Caleta Gonzalo, located 60 kilometers north of Chaitén. The access to the northern entrance of the park is open all year but there is no visitor infrastructure in this sector. To get to the northern sector of the park, follow the Carretera Austral 110 kilometers south of Puerto Montt, until arriving to Hornopirén. You can take your own car or travel on bus lines which leave every day from the bus station in Puerto Montt. Once in Hornopirén you can travel by boat to get to know the fjords and the Cahuelmó Hot Springs. To do this you need to rent a boat or contract an organized boat or sea kayaking excursion (see information in the Tours section). If you want to visit Cahuelmó Hot Springs you need to make a reservation first, given the limited space at the hot springs and the fragility of the ecosystem there. You can also get to Caleta Gonzalo by ferry and from there continue your trip on southward on the Carretera Austral to the Pumalín west sector, El Amarillo, the southern most sector of the park.

Hornopirén - Puerto Montt: Monday to Saturday 05:00 am, 06:15 am, 07:30 am and 1:20 pm; Sunday 08:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

The section between Puerto Montt and Hornopirén has one ferry crossing, multiple trips a day.
Navigation time: 30 minutes.
Departures from Caleta La Arena (southbound): 07:15 am, 10:15 am, 01:15 pm, 16:15 pm and 7:15 pm.
Departures from Caleta Puelche (northbound): 06:45 am, 09:30 am, 12:30 pm, 02:00 pm, 05:00 pm and 6:30 pm.

Ferry Hornopirén - Caleta Gonzalo
The ferry crossing from Hornopiren to Caleta Gonzalo is done in two ferry rides, one from Hornopiren to Leptepu, and one from Fiordo Largo to Caleta Gonzalo. This means that cars must drive the section of the road between the 2 ferry crossings, for 15 kms.. If you´re travelling by car, you must make reservations in advance, and you must have the license plates and the name and passport number of each passenger. If you are a pedestrian and you are catching the ferry in Hornpiren, this company provides a bus that leaves from Hornopirén in the ferry, all the way to Chaitén with stop overs along the way. If you are leaving from Puerto Montt, Kemel bus option is the best.

Park Access :

The Pumalín Park Project is open to the public year round and there is no entrance fee. Pumalín Park extends from just south of Hornopirén and runs south until about 45 kilometers south of Caleta Gonzalo. The way into the park vary, depending on what direction you're coming from and what time of year it is. In this section we detail the various ways of arriving to Pumalín.
