Pumalín Park

Where to Stay

The town of Chaitén, 58 kilometers south of Caleta Gonzalo on the Carretera Austral, was the largest town in the area until the 2008 eruption of the Chaitén Volcano caused extensive flooding and destruction. Now, the town is slowly being rebuilt, although many residents have left. Visitors can explore the "Pompeii of South Chile," where the marks of volcanic eruption are remarkable. Several grocery stores, restaurants and hotels/ cabañas have reopened. You can buy supplies and handicrafts here, and inquire about tours to Pumalín Park.
